Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young girl. The aunt was on during the night shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an avenue for action. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially conscious and taught her to use the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make an animated film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a new publicist at a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
